Adding Or Removing Thousands? Diy Projects And The Value Of A Home After Diy Home Improvement
Of course, nearly everyone as at some point tried DIY home improvement. But does it increase the potential selling value of a home after? According to interior designer Scot McAllister:
“Home improvements, their costs and their resultant profits are not a precise science. For this reason, it’s hard to specifically quantify what works and what doesn’t. For example, laminate flooring has undergone a popularity nosedive due to the market being flooded by so many photographic plastic options.”
McAllister continues with:
“Their cheapness has created a stigma – and even expensive options have become tarred with the same brush. When replacement costs start ticking away in buyers’ heads you don’t need to be Carol Vorderman to understand that offers will be reduced.”
DIY projects that increase the value of a home
To raise the value of a house, you need to carry out DIY home improvement projects that will definitely withstand the test of time. For example, if you do have laminate flooring you can install vintage wooden doors.
To install wooden doors, you would need a screwdriver, a pair of thick gloves, 4-inch door-frame screws and a hammer. To remove the door from the frame, simply unscrew the hinges from the door frame.
Get that old door off
Once the hinges come off, slowly ease the door from frame itself, taking care not to damage the edges. You would want to of course, preserve the old door for use later on. Home values go up when front doors are beautiful- so choose the replacement door properly.
Another interesting DIY home improvement project that can raise the value of your home is replacing worn out bathroom tiles. If the tiles are more than a decade old and you plan on selling within the next few months, now would be the opportune time to replace the tiles.
Replacing worn out tiles
The replacement of worn out bathroom tiles is a bit more difficult than the first project, Of course, the tiles in the bathroom can no longer be recovered completely intact, so make sure you can dispose of the broken tiles immediately afterward.
Designer tiles can be put in place of the old ones. Designer tiles employ a variety of new colors and textures that will naturally emphasize the dimensions of the bathroom.
For this project you would need a few sacks for tile disposal, a large chisel or a crow bar and a mallet or an equivalent. If possible, work the tiles when they are wet as this reduces friction and lessens dust clouds during working. Drive the crowbar against the underside of the tiles and slowly work around the tiles.
Ease the tiles off the floor, making sure that none are left behind. Smooth white cement may be used to install the new designer tiles after the bathroom floor has been re-leveled.
Justin Ray, an interior designer for the TV show How Not to Decorate warns people:
“A bad DIY project will always detract from the resale value. Anything that looks unprofessional, such as a badly-fitted kitchen or uneven plastering, will get buyers wondering.”

Rubbish Removal – 10 Tips To Save You Money And Give You An Easy Life
Home improvement projects are rapidly becoming the norm amongst homeowners in Australia and the Western world in general due to a combination of factors including:
- Growing number of DIY stores
- Cheaper materials/tools due to the China effect
- Growth in instructional DIY internet sites and magazines
The result of this growth in home DIY improvement projects? More rubbish and waste that needs to be collected from the residential consumers. With this in mind, the skip/bin business will be doing a roaring trade. However, for the domestic market, is a skip hire the best solution?
In Europe and the US, skip hire is dwindling for the growing majority of domestic home improvement projects. Due to advances in polypropylene innovation, a new breed of skip has emerged – a skip bag (proly bag). These are essentially plastic bags made out of polypropylene and have incredible strength and durability. They can handle all kinds of waste including bricks, roof tiles, ceramics, gravel, you can even throw a bath tub in there. They are initially flat-packed and are roughly A3 size. However, they expand to 2.5 cubic metres and can contain up to 1.5 tonnes of debris. Lapordata (the International Materials Testing Institute) testing on the new skip bag which has just been introduced into Melbourne and Sydney in Australia has been tested up to 9 tonnes. Yes, that wasn’t a typo, the poly bag passed a stress test at 9 tonnes. As the the skip bag’s marketing messages point out on their website, it really has the strength of a steel skip yet the convenience of a bag. Other brands common in the US and Europe are generally able to support a load of 4 tonnes however, crane trucks are only capable of lifting 2 tonnes so as a rule, the rubbish within a skip bag should not be in excess of 1.5 tonnes.

These heavy duty polypropylene bags really are taking off. In USA alone, skip bags delivered over USD 0M retail sales for a single brand through hardware retailer LOWES within a 6 month period.
UK company Hippowaste currently achieving sales of 18,000 units per month (B&Q) with a growth rate of >10% per month. And if those figures aren’t startling enough, the USA retail sales growth of skip bags has gone up 230% in the past 12 months.
So why are these bags preferable to traditional metal skips for your every day DIY enthusiast? Here are ten reasons right off the bat.
Cheaper than a skip. Skips vary in costs according to the location however after contacting a number of skip hire companies within the central Sydney area, a 7 day hire of a 2 cubic metre mini skip costs in excess of 0AUD. A skip bag as a comparison, costs AUD plus 0 collection charge.
Skip bags are conveniently available in stores from leading hardware stores and can even be purchased online.
Skip bags are flat packed until needed. Skip bags are approximately 50cm x 50cm x 5cm and naturally can be stored anywhere at home or in the boot of a car.
No rental time restrictions. Large DIY projects put you under pressure to get the task completed as the cost of a skip increases on a daily basis. However, use a skip bag and you can spend as long as you want doing your rubbish removal project. Spend weeks, months even. There is no extra charge.
No need to take a trailer to the tip or waiting around for skips to be delivered. Everything is done at the customers pace.
Use in your garden or on your driveway – helps keep your property tidy and minimise damage caused by heavy metal skips.
No hidden additional dumping fees when using a skip bag in Australia. Some skip companies charge extra for the cost of dumping different types of waste e.g. bricks/gravel.
Great for tight spaces. The skip bags are collected using crane trucks that can even lift up the bags from behind a garden fence.
Skips parked on the street are open to abuse by other people. How many times do you see skips with other people’s rubbish thrown in? By keeping your skip bag on the drive way, or on your front lawn, there is less exposure to this kind of opportunistic abuse.
These bags are environmentally friendly – a truck can only service one metal skip at a time. Several skip bags can be picked up by the same truck and taken to a waste collection centre in one single trip. This reduces the carbon footprint.
Households throughout the world are generating more and more rubbish with the advent of increases in DIY home improvement projects and the affect of our materialistic society. These new polypropylene bags are revolutionising the way the domestic market dispose of their rubbish and evidence of that is widely seen in the US and Europe. Australia are catching on and the skip bag is the final step in the DIY consumer experience – waste generated by DIY projects requires large volume rubbish removal.
